In Cos Cob, Connecticut, there is a structure just off the north side of Rte 1 that has the inscription "N.Y.N.H. & H. R.R. 1927" above the front. It appears to be some kind of large sub station or power house, and it is located at least 1/2 mile from the tracks.

Any ideas what this was?

I will try to go back and get a picture to post soon.

Thanks.

It was the pump house for the power plant. It was located at the railroad built dam on the Mianus River.

One can find some information on the Pumping Station on the “Built in America” website from the Library of Congress

http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/collections/habs_haer/

Enter Mianus River Pumping Station in the search engine. I include one photo from the section. It replaced the original somber stone structure that was by the Mianus River rail bridge. I came across a photo of this structure recently, and when I find it I will post it.

The 1927 station up the river is being or has been renovated as senior citizen activity center. Alas, this philosophy of adaptive reuse was not applied to powerhouse.

The pumphouse was renovated, but it was my understanding that the powerhouse site was too contaminated with coal tar etc. to be considered for practical renovation.
