The historic metre gauge network is being replaced by new Standard Gauge lines. I think this is the right option as all the old colonial rolling stock is wearing out. I think almost no new carriages have been ordered since the time I was in East Africa - 1970s - and although they tended to be comfortable there were obvious deficiencies in lighting and water supply for example, that weren't being dealt with.

The new gauge will probably allow some increase in speed. For example the journeys from west Kenya to Nairobi always required a sleeper whereas a SG line should allow day trains in less time. Probably more important will be the increased amount of freight that will be possible on the new line.
