CSX takes wraps off Maryland's first ultra-low-emission GenSet

Yesterday, CSX unveiled a GenSet locomotive at Baltimore Camden Station during a ceremony featuring federal and Maryland officials.

The Class I worked with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Maryland Departments of Transportation and Environment, and Mid-Atlantic Regional Air Management Association to introduce the first ultra-low-emission GenSet in the state. CSX plans to operate the locomotive at its Curtis Bay Yard in Baltimore. An EPA stimulus grant covered 65 percent of the $1.4 million needed to upgrade the locomotive; CSX contributed the remainder.

The locomotive is designed to reduce nitrous oxide and particulate matter emissions by 80 percent and carbon dioxide emissions, by up to 50 percent. The GenSet is part of CSX’s effort to reduce its overall CO2 emissions.

The EPA and CSX plan to partner on a second federally funded GenSet to be operated by the Class I in the same area. The Maryland DOT submitted an application for a $975,000 EPA Diesel Emissions Reduction Act grant on behalf of CSX, which will provide $425,000.
