Never knew the ARMY ever had an ALCO road locomotive. She is labeled as ex-ARMY #2089. This is from the Ozark Mtn. Railcar company. However, have done a little homework, but cannot find much..... Also, a wierd designation I have never heard of MRS-1????

Says she was never sent over seas.... wonder where she was supposed to be headed. Anyone shed a little more light? :-)

Alco built the RSX-4 on contract from GE. The MRS-1 is a Railfan term.

There are MRS1s preserved as EMD units and Alco also. There are five shown on this link: http://www.thedieselshop.us/PRSVDemdOthers.HTML (near bottom) and http://www.thedieselshop.us/PRSVDalcoRS.HTML (near bottom )
The units are correctly known by their military specification #E1670. GE won the contract to build locomotives to military specification, but farmed the units out. EMD built 13 as MRS1s. The rest were built by Alco as RSX-4s. They look similar so the designation has been blurred.
At least thats my understanding....

There was a baker's dozen Alco MRS-1s in Alaska when I was up there in the mid to late 70s. One was still lettered for the U S Navy. Just before I rotated out on a PCS move to Oklahoma, five EMD MRS-1 showed up at the Anchorage shops. Several of those had U S Navy markings.

MRS-1 is the GE version
MRS1 is the EMD version
