We found some photos in Hal Carstens' collection that we're trying to identify... Any ideas? They are on Railfan & Railroad magazine's facebook page...

The GP18's crossing the Ramapo River bridge and the photo of Walter Rich at Butler NJ were taken in September of 1980. DO ran an inspection trip shortly after taking control of the bankrupt NYS&W RR (today it is the NYS&W RY). The photo of NYS&W S2 206 and those boxcars was taken in 1986 after the NYSW took over the former L&HR from Conrail between Warwick and Sparta Jct. This was the first run taking cars to Eastern Propane at Sparta Jct. This was at Woodruffs Gap. I was standing next to Hal taking photos that day! For almost two years the NYS&W ran this isolated operation (remember the reopening of the NYS&W between here and Butler came later). This line was operated mostly on Saturdays and was an easy chase. After the 206 failed it was replaced by RS1 252 and then the SW9 120.

Tim, can you help identify anyone else in that photo with Walter Rich? Thanks so much for your info (and the good fortune to be standing next to Hal)!

I agree with the person on FB who thinks the person Walter Rich is talking to is Joe Synsation (SP), who was VP of Operations at one time for DO.

Thanks!
