I would like to invite anyone interested in Philadelphia area railroad history to the first meeting of the Morton Station Restoration Committee. It will be held on Thursday, January 27, 7:30 PM at the Morton Borough Hall. Directions are listed below.

Morton is located on the SEPTA R3 Elwyn/PRR West Chester Branch just east of Swarthmore. The committee is being formed in response to the threatened demolition of our 1891 PRR standard design outbound sided passenger shelter (it's the type with the griffins carved into the roof overhang, also found on the Chestnut Hill Branch). In the long term, we will also work with SEPTA to restore and preserve the entire station complex, including the passenger and freight stations, which were built around 1880. The passenger station is in an ornate Victorian gothic style, similar to the Glen Mills station, and is believed to have been designed by Joseph Wilson of the Wilson Brothers architectural firm. They also designed the original portion of Broad Street Station and the Reading Terminal Trainshed, as well as many other railroad structures. Morton has one of the few complete (i.e. passenger station, freight station, outbound shelter) historic suburban railroad complexes left in the Philadelphia area and our goal will be to keep it intact for generations to come.

In order to accomplish this, we will need all the help we can get. Anyone is welcome, no matter whther they live in the immediate area or not and even if they can only offer a small amount of time. We especially need people who have worked on these efforts in the past, even if only to provide occasional advice when we hit a bump in the road.

From the Ridley area (Route 420 northbound), make a right at the SEPTA railroad tracks onto Morton Avenue. At the first stop sign, make the soft right onto Alfa Terrace. Make a left at the first stop sign onto Highland Avenue. The Borough Hall parking lot is just ahead on the left.

From the Springfield area (Route 420 southbound) make a left onto Morton Avenue at the railroad tracks and follow the above directions.

Further research indicates that the station complex in Morton is likely the only 19th century example in the Philadelphia region which retains all three buildings typical for a suburban station stop (passenger station, freight station, outbound passenger shelter). Our effort has been endorsed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in recognition of the rarity of the complex.

We are currently trying to keep the complex intact by saving the outbound shelter, which has been slated for demolition. We have a short window of opportunity to submit a plan to save the shelter as part of our larger effort to preserve the entire complex. We are making progress, but we need all the help we can get.
