Why does it take about twice as long to traverse the uptown tubes than the downtown tubes? Hoboken to Christopher St. is scheduled for 8 minutes, while Exchange Place to WTC is schedule for 4 minutes.

From Exchange Place is basically staight line from one side of the Hudson River to the other. Leaving Hoboken you actually head to Jersey City and then hook a sharp left and begin your trip under the river. Speed control signals are very slow in the Caisson area. Track grading is much differnt and there are some slight curves. You get good straight rail with a speed increase just before Morton Street [NYC]. Then ecounter some really sharp curves between Morton and Christopher. Track conditions and tunnels condition are affected by water seepage in the uptown tunnels. The downtown tunnels were torn down to the tunnel rings, post Sept. 11th and everything is brand new. Hence a smoother ride.

what he said ^

all the curves and speed restrictions in the uptown tunnels and the caissons versus the welded rail and a straight shot from exchange to wtc
