As a favor to an off-line friend, I'm asking if MEC ever had a tie plant like Nashua on the B&M. He's interested in the location and years of operation, if possible.
Thanks from both him and me!

I have read that the national network of tie plants was created in the early 1920s, when chestnut blight spread through the east. Before that made chestnut wood unavailable, most RRs used it untreated because of its excellent decay resistance. AFAIK, New England got two plants, one on the NH near Cedar Hill and the other on the B&M in Nashua.

Thanks! Given the penny-watchfulness that typified the B&M/MEC joint management, that makes good sense.

The tie pressure treatment operation in Nashua wasn’t owned by the Maine Central. Koppers Inc. had a plant there that MEC utilized and probably the B&M and others as well. Koppers was taken over by Beazers East Inc. And lately not surprisingly the site has been found to have contamination issues http://www.nashuatelegraph.com/news/924 ... rs-at.html
