Can anyone identify the location of this photo? It is the US 5 crossing of the Maine Central. It's somewhere in Vermont as I know I was on vacation with a friend and we went up to visit some of my relatives in Rutland. When I look at Google Maps, the crossings I'm able to find are all overpasses but the photo was taken back in 1982 so things could have changed.

Thanks.

MEC entered St. J. a bit east of Rte. 5 after crossing Rte. 2. If pooling with MEC power was operative when the photo was taken, then it's possible the location is a bit to the north of downtown St. J. where the then-CPR line crosses a shifted Rte. 5. In the photo, the highway sign doesn't have an extended post to carry an out-of-frame "Turn Right To" indication for Rte. 5 North, which could have made the location the Rte. 2 crossing. The light also seems wrong for the Rte. 2 crossing because the train would have been heading roughly NE at that point, and there would have been more back-lighting. The light does seem appropriate for an SB crossing Rte. 5 north of downtown, however.

This is the only MEC photo by that photographer, so no other
photos to give a hint. Maybe an outside chance that the
Mountain Division was out of service between Whitefield
and St. J. and the MEC detoured via the B&M from Whitefield
to Woodsville/Wells River and up to St. J on the CP.

The 258, along with the 573 was the power on the ill-fated OCS train
that derailed in Miles Pond on 10/28/81, so it must have
been rebuilt by the date of this photo in July 1982.

C'mon guys. This is on Concord Avenue, across the street from the Cumberland Farms off Route 2

Note: 258 was also later NHV 3800, the only other locomotive I spotted on their railroad in NHV colors during my childhood

There was likely additional signage for the Route #5
indication or perhaps the arrow was missing.

NHV669: Do you know if the 259 - 3800 is still with us
or has it had a reincarnation and is on some dealer's
used car lot or razor blades at Cumbys? Thanks...

The 258 became NHV 3800:
Wrecked 10/28/81 and repaired in 1982. Sold 7/02/94 to New Hampshire & Vermont 3800 after being rebuilt by VMV
(Paducah, Ky.). Returned to Helm and assigned HLCX 3619. Sold 5/97 to Ottawa Valley Rail Link OVAL 2000.
Transferred MacKenzie Northern Railway RLGN 2000. Renumbered to RLGN 3873.

The 259:
Sold 4/06 to Brookville Mining Equipment (Brookville, Pa.). Shipped 5/10/06 on LOED-10 from Lowell, Ma. as BMEX 259.
Released 7/07 as BMEX 259 co-generation unit. (BL20GH). Sold 8/11 to Central California Traction Co. 2101.

Thanks NHV669. This is the only photo as we were just driiving when we got stopped at the grade crossing. I jumped out of the passenger side and grabbed the shot.

One more question NHV669, Concord Ave corssing in which town?

Thanks.

It's in St. J. I believe that is the 2nd or 3rd to last crossing before the line crosses the bridge into the old yard. Concord Ave. splits off 2 there and meets Rt. 5 up over the river, and yes that sign is still there too

Good to know someone else knows the 3800's backstory. One of my first questions when I joined here was what happened to the two locomotives I was aware existed on the then-NHV line during my childhood. I only spotted it once or twice ever, and the only time i can precisely remember, it was parked in exactly in the same spot as 669 in my avatar
