I don't think that the film of soot is enough of a problem for the MBTA (or Keolis especially) to care, given the budget they have. I've never heard a crew call in a windshield or headlight obstructed by the soot. I think clean equipment is a good investment for PR alone, but it just isn't on the radar as it is not critical to the service.

So theoretically every train gets washed once or twice a day.
Trains don't go through S&I on a daily basis.

Trains don’t typically go through the building. Some do depending on the time of day but most go out the east end the way they came in.
