Some sort of structure failure on the MBB's will force their retirement,NYCTA had a whole fleet of cars retired way before their time due to structure issues.
Remember they were put away wet at Seaview not prepped for long term storage.

Your crystal ball is broken. There are no structural issues with the fleet.

That's correct. I mentioned the wreck to point out that the incident which inadvertently caused those cars to be removed from the south side involved one of them, though you're right to point out that its involvement was not a contributing factor.

What kind of damage does the 1504 have?

1533 officially back in service today. Meaning for the first time in a long time the entire fleet of control cars are all in service).

It may be exposure to salt both tracked in and thrown onto the cars which can limit their lifespans ?

The 520 is the original car, any car numbered 533 and up is rebuilt from a control car (533 being the 1503).

At NETransit, the 535 is listed as being rebuilt (although not yet the 534 as you mentioned), but it doesn't show which control car is was rebuilt from:

MBBs overhauled and in service: 520, 533 (ex 1503) , 535 (20 cars to be overhauled)

I tried pulling up the site on an archived page from last week to see which car was out of service that's no longer listed today could've been it, but both lists (from the archived page and today) look the same.

I only know as much as you guys do. All I know is 520 is not from a former control coach. 533 and 535 are in which idk the number that 535 was rebuilt from. Although I know 533 is ex 1503 as stated by netransit roster page.

Or at least all the surviving control cars, since some have been/will be rebuilt into coaches.

I saw the video of 533 that was posted earlier and found it interesting that the marker lights were kept in the rebuild... even though no other MBTA trailer coach has them... only the cab ends of the cab control cars.

I think car 535 may have been originally 1501 but I have no solid evidence to confirm that. Just my guess.
