For those that didn't make it up to to catch the (last ever??) Maple
Festival trains, I thought I would share some of the images I was
able to capture over the weekend. My thanks to The crew, Mike Grout,
and Norm Mc Sweyen for their hospitality, as well as Supervisor Bob
Colucci. Thanks are also in order to Brent Niggli, who endured the
Sunday chase with myself and Marc Samuleson and was kind enough to:
1) play navigator, 2) allow me the use of his driveway in Marathon,
the battery charger for my camera(which allowed me the images),3) and
the use of his "facilites" when Nature called. His accomodations and
friendship are greatly appreciated. Now to the pics...

Saturday, April 5, dawned damp, overcast, and cool. Yet ridership was
much better than expected, with quite a few people having had to be
turned away prior to the first trip south from Cortland. Heres the
train in Marathon, plus an indication of the Saturday ridership:

Sunday, however, turned out to be the best day of all, weatherwise.
there were near cloudless deep blue skies, temps around 60 degrees,
and you couldnt simply ask for a better day. here are some images
from Sunday:

First, a couple of images in Cortland to start things off:

Next, after riding the round trip, myself, Marc Samuelson, and Brent
Niggli decided to chase a trip, and we relly put my truck through its
paces on one road in particular! Here are some images from the chase:

Crossing Kellogg road just south of Cortland:

anyway) called Virgil, NY:

We then decided to catch the return trip northbound at Blodgett
Mills:

And finally, at the end of the day, Back in Cortland, where after the
last trip, the BHPX crew took the train north to Syracuse t tie up
before taxiing back to Binghamton:

It was a great day for photography on Sunday. We came up and shot a few round trips and rode one of the mid-day runs. Many people expressed disbelief that the train wouldn't be running next year.

The impression I got from the supervisors was "never say never". BUT... the bilevels need work to them, especially in the climate contorl areas of heating and A/C. I think the real possibility of no trains next year is what brought so many people out, even on Saturday when the weather was less than favorable. Sunday's beautiful weather REALLY had the riders(and railfans) coming out of the wood work!
