According to "Maine Central in Color" Volume #1 (Plant/Melvin),
the MEC had F3A 671A and 672A and F3B 671B and 672B built in
1947 and F3As 681-686, built in 1948.

MAINE CENTRAL F-2's 671 and 672 had the so called "chicken wire" down between the portholes with large number indicators and their F-3's were the pase 5's with the large number indicators and stainless grilles the same as F-7's, but with slotted dynamic brake vent on the roof instead of a fan.

Dave, I understood that F-2s were only built in 1946, and that MEC 671/2 A/B were "Phase II" F-3s (e.g. chicken wire, like the BAR's), while 681-686 were "Phase III" (AKA "F-5"), like B&M 4227/8.
