I'm redoing my proposal for the Circle line (a different post), and am considering rail alignments, yards, and transfer points to the Brown/Red lines. I am looking for more information about this particular rail yard:

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=41.909216 ... s&t=m&z=17

1. Who owns this yard?

2. Is it still in use?

3. The rail bridge at North Ave has 6 tracks. I assume that all tracks are used?

That's the former C&NW yard. The tracks go off toward the Tribune Freedom Center. I would think that UP owns it now.

Looking up "Chicago Terminal Railroad" in wikipedia, I got this map from the unofficial page for CTM:

It appears that the yard belongs to UP (North Ave Yard). I'm not sure how much it is used. Would this yard be needed to connect CTM cargo rails into the UP network? If so, then I guess this yard would still serve a vital purpose.

That is correct.

That is also correct. UP interchanges with CTM here, and runs a transfer job between North Ave. and Proviso, via the Harvard sub to Deval. Last I heard, it runs several nights a week after Metra quits (or is close to calling it such) for the day...

I believe cars are staged there for the Chicago tribune and Blommer Chocolate, but that may be wrong now. At one time, the Sun-Times was printed nearby, too, and cars were staged at that yard as well.

If you want good info on Chicago's north side, this is an awesome site.
