Near Alabama Av. on the J, there is a piece of structure which rises above the main structure in the middle and ends at the beginning of the next platform east. Is this a remnant of the old connection to the LIRR?

The old connection to the LIRR was at Chestnut Street, and was a level junction.

What you are referring to is nicknamed "The Alabama Ave Launch Pad", It was intended to install an upper level, bi-directional third track for express service, but the structure can't take the weight of a third track.

Thank you sir. That relic always made me wonder. I was watching a video of the J and finally remembered to ask.
