NS had in previous times redundant facilities they chose to eliminate (productivity gains) and now can't handle the volume. Ask UPS what they think of NS west of Pittsburgh or better yet, look at the interstates for trailers that say Yellow Freight, ABF, Overnite, or UPS Freight. Have to love these big companies, NS will turn this into an advantage by going to the federal govt for $'s to aid their capital improvements. Look at their proposal for the I-80 corridor or the eco engines coming out of Juniata Works with federal aid.
SOU re-built the Middle District of the CNP&TP Rwy in the 60,s with private capital from a "rat-hole" into a boulevard of steel. An operating racetrack thru the mountains that was a text book example of engineering & operating excellence. Turn the clock back to a Saturday afternoon in the early 70's when #229 ran in sections on the weekends, the first one easily 7500 feet long. We'd be under three hours across the 2nd District thru the mountains with trains like this. It was only possible because we had the tools, the physical plant, and the leadership to make it possible. The SOU demanded a lot but furnished just as much back in great equipment and facilities to make it all happen. Men with names like, Brosnan, Claytor, Crane, Hamilton, Moore, & Hall made this possible. These men planned for the next 15 years...not the next quarter.
