Everyone: What is now Tropical Depression Ida along with a strong frontal boundary (very warm and humid air from the Ida remnants interacting with cooler and drier air from the north) touched off severe weather events in the northeast - with widespread flooding, severe thunderstorms and tornadoes being reported.

Central Park in Manhattan reported almost 7 inches of rain (6.95 in.) in just a few hours time in the evening. 3.15 inches of rain fell in just one hour surpassing - just 10 days later - an hourly rainfall record set August 22 of almost two inches of rain. There is major flooding issues currently in the NYC area as I post with all of the rail transit in the area - NYC Subway, LIRR, MNCR and NJT currently shut down completely as of 2:00 AM EDT.

There are going to be travel disruptions for all rail transit in the northeast on Thursday September 2. If anyone is using Amtrak or any other rail service plan accordingly and call ahead...MACTRAXX

7am roundup:

MTA NYC Subway: Practically shut down. IMT lines (numbered) only running in the Bronx save for the 7. BMT/IND lines (lettered) cut way down but connected.

LIRR: Atlantic Avenue to Jamaica practically shut down, limited service.

Metro-North: Shut down... which means...

Amtrak: No service Philladelphia to Boston.

NJ Transit: All rail service save for Atlantic City Rail Line is suspended. Hobokoen and River Line Light Rail limited service.

If you're in the NYC area, stay inside, stay safe, watch for tornadoes. We had two touch down in Annapolis, MD. They're still cleaning up down there.

Amtrak: No service Philladelphia to Boston.
Interesting since Amtrak's train status shows NYC departures on time except for the 6:00 AM Acela and the 9:35 AM which show as "unavailable".

BUT their train tracker shows 6 trains at NYP and #138 stopped near Metro Park

Train tracker hasn't "cleared" the deck yet (as of 9 am 9/2). NEC is/was a mess. There were some exception made to some trains departing Washington DC - with Acelas - but NEC shutdown and some trains listed with service disruptions in Philadelphia from trains that should have reached their destinations last night, 9/1. Wires down and flooding between Trenton and Metropark, at minimum.

Interesting thing I just realized as I'm watching today's episode of NBC's Today show as it's broadcasting. One of the main hosts, Craig Melvin, was working from home -- and during a combined shot, they said he was coming in from Connecticut. He must be riding Metro-North, since that's shut down right now.

At 6AM there was an eastbound LD train tied down on No. 1 Track at Trenton. ACS-3 Amfleet IIs-Viewliner II-Viewliner II Baggage-Dorm. Perhaps 92??

NEC suspended for rest of day as well as Springfield line. 91 and 97 will originate out of Washington. 48 will turn as 49 at Albany - 448/449 will continue to run as scheduled.

That was #50. It left Trenton a little while ago bound for NY 14 1/2 hours off the card.

Apparently near Dobbs Ferry.

GM (and Everyone:) It's worse...Reported at mid day Friday 9/3:
There is a mud/dirtslide near Yonkers that has covered completely at least two of the Hudson Line tracks. The hillside is not stable - there could be more dirtfall. Emergency retaining walls may be needed... There is no rain forecast (thankfully for the hard-hit NYC area) until late Sunday into Monday (9/5-9/6) which is showers and/or a T-storm - and not a deluge...

Today (Friday) is the start of the holiday getaway for the upcoming Labor Day weekend as I post at 1 PM EDT. With all of the resulting problems from the 9/1 storm it may be rather interesting this year...MACTRAXX
