I had the opportunity to see Graham Claytor Jr. in the cab of 4501 in 1976 at the Jacksonville Yards of Southern Railway. The occasion was my first main line steam trip. It was certainly quite a sight to see the head man, in his suit, at the throttle. And, a little sooty to boot.
It was Mr. Claytor that rescued the 4501 and instituted the steam program at Southern that so many of us enjoyed.
