Going over assorted GP7 and GP9 pictures at the Fallen Flags website, one sees that all the GP7s were long end first, but not all the GP9s.

Was there a reason for such? Early GP9s long end, later GP9s short end?

There were GP-7's set up short hood front as well. They were 5818-5827 and were purchased from the C&O in 1956 for service in Canada, as they were mfg. by GMD in Canada. In 1957 the NYC went to GMD and bought GP-9's # 6039-6075, also short hood front as well. All USA GP-7 and 9's were long hood front.

GMD units stayed in Canada, if they were in the U.S., import duties would apply. The GMD built for NYC GP-9's matched the originally built for C&O GP-7's.
