Last week I saw a CSX GP-30 in tandem with a GP-40 and I wondered how many were still in use and who may be using them.

The last operating GP30's on CSX were retired in the mid-90's..
If you have seen a CSX "GP30" out on the road in the past 15 years, its a slug..

I think there are now no GP30's remaining in Class-1 service.
BNSF had some (rebuilt, of course) running up into 2009..but I think they are all now retired.
(maybe a few still running..anyone know?)

A few soldier on in shortline service..

BNSF has a significant number of rebuilt GP30's still in operation:

http://www.thedieselshop.us/BNSF.HTML

These include units rebuilt to "GP39M" specs (which included replacing the as- built generator with an AR10 alternator and a DASH 2 electrical system) as well as ATSF rebuilt GP30u's. Both versions use 645 power assemblies in the original 16-567 crankcases....
