did some reasearch. apparently the electrical syestems for the NEC are still compatible for a GG1. it wasn't upgraded due to the cost of matinence and replacing the locomotives that were in use.

Doesn't matter what system is out there, this is going to be a cosmetic restoration only. It's always nice to dream, though.

For that one particular GG1 anyway.

Yes, so no GG-1s will ever operate under their own power, because by design they were cooled by PCBs, yadda yadda.

What if a GG-1 were restored and made free-wheeling, so that as a dummy, it could head-end other units on a photo-op train?

With acres of cash and the blessing of the Amtrak Mechanical Dept., anything is possible.

I think it would be more cost effective to build a generator car to run behind a GG1 as an electrical power source and run it that way. But I still don't think it will ever happen.

True. considering that the conditions of the remaning GG1 units is basically unknown, then if one was serviceable, then we would have to find a alternitave method of cooling the GG1 systems

If the main operating issue is that they were PCB cooled, couldn't one just find an alternative coolant? There has to be something out there that's environmentally safe and will still effectively cool the transformer. Either that, or find a new transformer with either the same specs, or at least one close enough.

Never say never, even if it doesn't happen in any of our lifetimes.

Folks, the topic of this thread is the cosmetic restoration of one GG-1 in New Jersey. The discussion of restoring one to operation is moot. If it were practical to even attempt, folks would be working to that end. It's been beaten to death and discussed many times in the past, do a search of this site and check out the old discussions.
