Probably 'crater'(sp?) grease. In other words a very very thick grease for the gear case.

The rope (or what ever it was) used to create a seal between the gear case halfs was called gear case packing.

Crater compound served as a lubricant for the Bull & Pinion gears.
I hated that stuff....

In old Ford truck motors, there was a seal made of the same thing for the rear main bearings. Made out of basically the same stuff as a candle wick. Ford called them a Wick Seal. Supposed to have a minimal amount of pressure on the crankshaft, and would soak oil into it and expand a little making a good seal. Now replaced with a rubber 2 piece seal. I'd imagine that one on the locomotives must just be cranked together by 2 halves to make a seal???

on the fiberglass gear cases we use on the emd motors, we have a foam rubber type gasket in the female side of the gearcase [top half] that assist in sealing the 2 halves together. we run a bead of silicone around the female side then bolt them together.. the case splits rarely leak that way, but the pinion seal and the axle seals leak often as they only have a white vinyl/rubber seal..

the ge steel gearcases are entirely sealed with silicone [dow corning 832] except for the axle seals, which are glued to the gearcases with the same silicone. when done right, they will go a long time before they start to leak

We used to use a strip felt like material glued in with black silicone sealant . The case halves were bolted together with large bolts and inch drive "rattle guns" .
