El objetivo principal del tren mercante entre México y Guatemala es facilitar el comercio entre ambos países, así como la creación de fuentes de empleo para quienes viven en esa región.
Este viernes 9 de agosto de 2019 fue inaugurada la nueva estación Puerto Seco, ubicada en Tecún Umán, departamento de San Marcos, la cual fue construida con anterioridad para el paso del tren de carga.

En la Estación de Puerto Seco embarcarán o desembarcarán productos que tienen como destino el Norte y los que ingresan a la región.
Frente a la nueva estación las personas podrán observar la antigua Estación Ferroviaria de Tecún Umán, la cual fue declarada Patrimonio Histórico y Cultural de la Nación, según el Acuerdo Ministerial No. 122-2005. Debido a su valor arquitectónico, cultural e histórico para los guatemaltecos.
Esto se convierte en el primer paso para la conexión del transporte de carga desde el Triángulo Norte hasta Centroamérica.
