Premiering the zero-emissions vehicle at the InnoTrans rail industry trade fair in Berlin last week, the company said the Coradia iLint can travel at speeds of up to 140 kilometres per hour, carry 300 passengers and range 800 kilometres on a single “tank” of hydrogen—putting it on par with the regional diesel trains it’s designed to replace.
...
Using one of its popular diesel trains as a jumping off point, Alstom retrofitted the old design with state-of-the-art technology. At the core of the new train is a hydrogen fuel cell built by Canadian cleantech firm Hydrogenics Corp.

Along with the fuel cells, the new train includes lithium-ion batteries to store energy that isn’t immediately put to use within the train and an energy management system to ensure power is dispersed efficiently throughout the vehicle.

The roadshow will start in Rhineland-Palatinate and continue in Baden-Württemberg, Saxony, Thuringia, Berlin and Brandenburg.

“This roadshow is a great opportunity for passengers, media and political stakeholders to get to know our Coradia iLint hydrogen train,” said Dr Jörg Nikutta, Managing Director for Alstom in Germany and Austria.

“It represents an existing environment-friendly alternative for non-electrified or partially electrified lines and offers increased passenger comfort thanks to a significantly quieter train than a conventional diesel multiple unit,” said Nikutta continued.

Since September (2018), the first two hydrogen trains from Alstom are in regular passenger service on the Elbe-Weser network. Starting in 2021, the Landesnahverkehrsgesellschaft Niedersachsen (LNVG) will use 14 Coradia iLints to transport regular travellers between Cuxhaven, Bremerhaven, Bremervörde and Buxtehude with the fuel cell trains.

Will they call it the HIndenburg?
All aboard Britain’s first hydrogen train

Hydrogen-powered trains are arguably the greenest trains out there.

"Mini power stations on wheels", is how Alex Burrows from the University of Birmingham describes them.

He is the project director for the 'Hydroflex' train which was showcased at an event in the West Midlands.

Unlike diesel trains, hydrogen-powered trains do not emit harmful gases, instead using hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity, water and heat.

It is "a fully green fuel", says Helen Simpson from rail rolling stock company Porterbrook, which created the Hydroflex in partnership with Birmingham University's centre for Railway Research.

Hindenburg Class. What is the wheel designation, 4-4? The original flew over my father's junior high school on it's way to NJ... From what I've read/watched, hydrogen got a bad rap because is was the aluminum powder in the coating applied to the envelope fabric that was flammable, and caught fire due to static electricity, the hydrogen envelopes only igniting afterwards.
