Your #2 is called the Bluebonnet paint scheme. Seven ex-passenger cab units were done in this scheme.

There is no such thing as a blue warbonnet. This scheme I have heard refered to as the Bookends scheme for the yellow ends or as the Cigar Band because of the shape of the Santa Fe herald on the nose. May also have been refered to as the Pinstripes paint scheme.

Hi All,

Here in California, you still occasionally see an old engine with an SP-SF paint job on it, even though the merger never went through.

Ah, yes. The infamous, Whoops! "Shouldn't Paint So Fast" "Kodachrome" paint scheme. Interesting that a few of those still survive...

The notorious IRK quipped...

"if we're fans of ATSF, we've probably seen it."

Well, there are those of us who are casual fans of the Santa Fe who may be unaware of the "yellow faced" and "blue faced" warbonnet schemes existence and therefore haven't seen it before.

Engineer James responded...

"Just wanted to post it, thought id be interesting."

It is interesting, James. I was not aware that there were schemes outside of the standard warbonnet, the blue and yellow warbonnet and, as pennsy pointed out, the SPSF Kodachrome. Although, given that railroads usually experiment from time to time with their paint schemes, it's not a major surprise.

That being said, while your youthful exuberance and passion for railroading is commendable, it has been a little... extreme at times. "Santa Fe 'yellow-faced' warbonnets" would have been a better choice for a subject header. "PAGING THOSE WHO LIKE THE SANTA FE... YOU HAVE TA SEE THIS!!!!" has an air of urgency, to it... like they're going to demolition a depot or have unearthed an important artifact of some kind relating to the Santa Fe... something along those lines. So, you might want to tone it back a bit.

Still, this was a valid and interesting bit of info. you presented and it was very appreciated, James.

How's that?? What do you think of the Bluebonnet? I like it, just like the old #315L, Yellowbonnet.

Engineer James inquired...

"How's that?? What do you think of the Bluebonnet? I like it, just like the old #315L, Yellowbonnet."

Well, I'd remove the "new," since the Santa Fe no longer exists as an individual entity and the schemes were introduced... about three years before I came into this world. Other than that, it looks good. As for the bluebonnet, it was alright, although, I thought the yellowbonnet was a better choice for the passenger trains. It was striking and "popped out" at you, whereas the blue was more subdued (which is odd, because the D&H pseudo-warbonnets were really sharp looking... at least to me).

GOLDEN ARM wondered...

"Engineer James, are you SURE you you didn't used to go by the moniker "TerryC" ? Just curious.......... :-D"

GA, I doubt it's the same guy... he doesn't have an unhealthy obcession with the SD70 series, brake pads on GE units and Winnebego air conditioning units utilized as HVAC on the aforemetnioned SD70 and AC4400W... whatevers (sorry, guys... not a fan of the latest generations of motive power).

I think the only similarities here are age and passion... the want to share "new" discoveries and debate issues that have gone around a time or two with we veterans here on the board. Call it the naivate of youth, call it youthful exuberance... call it annoying, if you want. I say give the kid a little more of a break...

... until he starts pondering stripping locomotives down to their frames and building modular, multi-purpose, self-propelled freight cars out of them. Then I'd be more inclined to dismiss his questions and other postings.

Did SF try any others??
