The shortline way is the way to go unless you have a bizillion years of senority!! yeah, the pay is a bit lower, benefits just as good. and you still get to "play" with trains. and you sleep in your own bed.
I came to the rr lifestyle later than most as i am in my mid 30's. the "normal" job route is horrible, you get screwed over, by the company, sometimes the union and sometimes by the labor code, hell sometimes by all 3!!
But i do sympathise with ya, get the call id, its well worth the money.

I'm sure having good scenery around helps out (no women on my RR). They would have to install toilets in the engines.

Ever get tired of it all? I did and I'm gone. Having NO life and NOthing to live for outside of abuse by company jag-offs...is NOt compensated by money. By ANY money.

I'm now starving but I'm king of all I see. I work long days, that I start when I need and finish predictably. When I want a day off I don't work.

Loss of RR Retirement? That probably would have happened anyway. CSX seems to want to become a 100 percent employee terminator. Fuggum...the imbecilic bosses can move their own trains.

They don't understand what drives humans...such as a desire for structure and a time with things OTHER than work. They cannot learn; so let them fail.

Haha........you gotta love that. Also, I was wondering......I am currently 15 and would like to work on the railroad in the future. Which is a more enjoyable atmosphere; passenger service or freight service? I would assume that it would be passenger, but I just wanted to see everyone else's opinion.

When I get fed up, I think of back in my younger days, baling hay, working in factories, putting up roadsigns on the side of the interstate.

Hell, I may have to put in the time, and put up with the BS, but at least it ain't real work.

I work for a short line and sometimes wish i had hired on with CPR or CNR. But this Aug will be 12 yrs for me. Started out $8/hr now at $23.75. We're non union so i don't get to experience the frustrations of dealing with union B.S. from my fellow co-workers. Get paid every week instead of bi-weekly. I have been working the aft shift for the past 8 yrs 3-11pm but when the work is finished we can leave ( 5 hr quit ) Wknds off. One hell of a nice xmas party, free hotel, drinks, dinner. Plus $750 bonus right before xmas. Also I'm classed up as a hogger now so it's nice not to have to work in the freezing rain anymore. 5 yrs you get 3 weeks vac. 10 yrs you get 4 weeks vac. 15 yrs you get 5 weeks vac. Like the earlier poster said the first 15 yrs is the hardest after that it's like water off a ducks back. You just kinda go with it.

I never get tired of it. I hired out when I was 19 so I didnt have family obligations. I think alot of the guys that hire out later have a harder time as they are used to a normal schedule. Several people I work with are unhappy at times because they have to work alot to pay for the brand new house with the brand new vehicles in the driveway. I am fortunate enough to be able to take my alloted days I can miss within a month and have plenty of money to get by.BNSF's availablity is 75%. That is 5 week days and 2 weekend days a month. Most places I work have 7/3 extra boards which means every seven days you get three days off work. I am lucky enough to get a few days off a month but I wish we were allowed more weekend days.....who doesnt?

Wow. Set days off on the extra board. And one would presume you gegt the full guarantee when you are off?

Yep. A couple of guys I work with may be tired of it. We had another open switch incident this morning at Bieber. Crew is ok but it put 4 motors in the dirt and cars into the depot. They evacuated the nearby town acct an LPG car was leaking, sounded like a doozy. When more details come I will post again. The last northbound they met had reported they had a box 20 but when they approached the North siding switch it was lined for main track so they kept on trucking and reported the switch lined for the normal position. Where they met the southbound I am not sure but when they got to Bieber they hit the dirt. The company thinks maybe the northbound ran through the switch but I doubt it. There is no doubt they split the switch who is at fault at this point is yet to be determined.

That is a great way to get a few days off, especially during hunting season!

Bieber..... Is that the same place where the manifest train went through open switch and hit some grain cars at 40 mph a few years a go?
