In this month's Modern Railways magazine is the following information.
London-Paris
Eurostar 71.03%
British Airways 9.91%
BMI 4.38%
Air France 11.69
Easyjet 2.99
London-Brussels
Eurostar 64.36%
BA 20.36
BMI 12.95
VLM 2.01
Other air 0.32
They don't give figures for those who take the bus (quite low each day) or drive. But it is clear that Eurostar has been hugely successful in getting market share.
When the next stage of the High Speed line opens in 2007 they should attract even more passengers, and may extend to Amsterdam (when the Dutch high speed line is open), or even Koeln.
At present the problem with Amsterdam is having to change at Brussels, and the worry of whether one will make the connecting Eurostar.
However, there are security matters. Will it be possible for passengers to join at Brussels or Lille for Amsterdam (treating Eurostar like Thalys). Only if they can would it be profitable.
