Cross channel rail operator Eurostar saw both revenues and passenger numbers rise last year as passengers chose train over plane.

Eurostar carried 7.5 million passengers in 2005, a 2.4 per cent increase, boosted by a 14 per cent rise in business class traffic.

This increase meant that the train operator accounted for 71 per cent of the total London-Paris passenger market in 2005, as well as 64 per cent of London-Brussels traffic.

Revenues also rose by seven per cent last year to £464 million as a result of the passenger uplift.
This is before the recent disturbance in the air industry, which has driven more people on to the trains.
