I am reading a book (towards Asmara by Thomas Keneally ) at the moment , based in Eritrea , north east Africa . It jogged mty memory about the railway been rebuilt there .
a google search turned up this website , amongst others .
Anyone been there , plans to go ??

The last I heard was that they had got some of the retired workers to train new ones and had put into operation at least one steam locomotive. It seems a good example of self-help.

Yes , i cant remember where i read the article about the rebuilding of the railway , but it seems they are very proud of it . Sounds like an interesting country .

They have to be admired as a country, with the long war they are currently recovering from with Ethiopia

Yes , they seem to have been forgotten by the rest of the world , and left to fight the war on their own . Hopefully peace prevails , and they can get on with rebuilding the country .
