It was mentioned on a yahoo group today that the plant has been saved before at the last minute. Hopefully that happens again. I can't think the state would spend all that money to rehab a line only to have it come to an abrupt end.

Mannington mills and Koppers still receive cars (though not many). Garmar Industries may occasionally as well. Of course the decline in business will make Conrail question the branch's economic viability. If they do decide to abandon it, a state or county authority could take it over as Salem county did south of Swedesboro. Unfortunately the current administration in NJ is not interested in lifting a finger to save jobs or improve infrastructure- only badmouthing unions and public sector employees to distract attention away from REAL problems.

Traffic on the Salem branch has never been heavy, as long as I can remember. Ten cars a day, at most-- not enough to warrant a run from Camden, so instead, cars for Salem are sent to Paulsboro via the CA-11 and a pair of GPs that normally switches Paulsboro yard then brings them back up to Woodbury and then back down to Swedesboro for interchange with the SRNJ.

SRNJ 100 spotted two feed hoppers at the Woodstown Farmers Exchange at 1:00P, then went on north to Swedesboro. Came back about 45 minutes later with two bulkhead flats loaded with poles for Koppers. A brief exchange with the Conductor/Manager/Operator indicates that traffic has been sparse since Anchor Glass closed. He said "if it weren't for these guys", pointing to the two cars of poles, "we wouldn't have much of anything."
