I'm not sure how you can make the platforms wider. Where are the tracks going to go?

They can start by clearing the existing platforms of all the pillars and anything other than staircases, escalators and elevators.

I guess if the whole thing falls down on the tracks that would let a lot of light in

There's been a suggestion that the platforms can be widened by eliminating some of the tracks -- the only way they can be widened -- but that seems to be substituting one problem for another. The bag will hold only so many pounds.

Impossible unles MSG is demolished to remove the support columns.

The LIRR concourse was renovated to remove low hanging beams. Surely modern engineering can find a solution to make supporting columns smaller and/or fewer in number without compromising the integrity of the building even while not interrupting occupancy and use.

You can increase the span of the beams, reducing the number/volume of columns . You can't make the columns narrower. You don't want to rely on magic high-strength steel, this stuff has to last a very long time.

Is there a way to have two layers of tracks? That or expanding the footprint of Penn Station tracks seems to be the only way to increase capacity. Maybe there is a need for a couple of bypass tracks, for trains not stopping at Penn - not every trip starts or stops in Manhattan anymore.

The original cavern station that was part of ARC was in a way a second layer of tracks as it was designed to be below Penn.

Can’t imagine which services going through Penn would benefit dropping it as a stop. Literally the highest number of boardings on the entire corridor.

My wife and I are going to the Museum for a Day in Boonton this Sunday, taking an Empire Train down in the morning to connect with NJT Train # 6919 to Boonton (via the "Scoot" at Denville).

This will be our first time riding NJT; what's the deal with boarding NJT from Moynihan? I've read that technically you're supposed to board from NYP, but I'd rather grab a bite and wait/board from Moynihan if possible.

NR - BE AWARE that there is NO weekend service on the Boonton Line between Bay Street Montclair and
Denville...Train #6919 is a M&E M/D train to Dover (NYP 10:11 AM) that connects with Train #515 from Hoboken at
Newark Broad Street 10:32 AM...On weekends the only M&E MU service operating out of Hoboken is to Montclair
every two hours from HOB westbound (#515 at 10:08 AM) and leaving BSM eastbound (Ex: #518 at 11:00 AM)...

NJ Transit trains board from the "traditional" NYP Station area - the newer NJT ticket office/waiting area is over
towards 7th Avenue and the regular Amtrak/NJT boarding area towards 8th Avenue...Moynihan Station is west of
8th Avenue across to 9th Avenue - the food court is more towards the 9th Avenue end of the Train Hall...MACTRAXX

NJT is running weekend specials for the Boonton "Museum for a Day" event with connection at Denville, via the Morristown Line.


It's been awhile since we've been "across the street" to NYP. We're regular Empire Service riders, but ever since Moynihan opened we pretty much never have a reason to use NYP unless we're catching a subway connection or seeing a show at the Garden.

Last time we were in NYP the Shake Shack was gone, McDonalds was gone, the Pizza Hut/Nathan's/Tim Hortons was gone, etc. etc.; it was pretty depressing lol.
