There are several photos floating around of a EMD "display set" of F7's numbered 1950. Howerver, while the two cab units are known to have gone to the L&N, what became of the b-unit that was with them? It is definitely not matching, as the B is a passenger unit, while the A's are freight service. Any ideas?

I've looked around the net and haven't found much. I will offer that EMD demos #1950A and 1950B were built in June 1950 and sold to the L&N in November 1950. That gives us a narrow window of possibilities to consider for #1950C.

Does it match up with any F7Bs that were under construction in that time frame? Could it be a rebuild that was used for demonstration purposes before it was returned to owner?

How do you know the B-unit was a passenger unit?
if it was a "traveling display set" in a matched A-B-A configuration, it seems likely the B-unit was a also a freight unit..

Found a photo:

seems highly unlikely the B-unit was a "passenger" FP7B..it was probably a regular freight F7B.

In the photo Scottychaos linked to... The A units have silver tanks, the B unit a shorter red tank: maybe when the photo was taken the B-unit was half-way through conversion from one configuration to the other? (I take it this would involve replacing a single fuel tank with a pair of tanks for fuel and water, or vice versa.)

boiler tanks use to be wing tanks to side of fueltank. not in front of fuel tank as boiler would seriuously upset ballace of engine.
Fuel and water consumpion would not be equal so the weight in your scenario would be all on one truck if boiler is not used or if fuel use is lower than boiler water use.

The "B" unit in the 1950 demonstrator string was explained by the article titled "Something About F-Units" in Railfan & Railroad magazine, July 2008 issue, page 45. It is one of the "visible" F-units that was displayed at trade shows and public events. The fuel tank, battery box, and the brake cylinders on the Blomberg trucks are color coded to match the colors for their respective systems as they are shown in diagrams in the EMD operators manuals.

Scala's "Diesel Demonstrators" book clearly shows the cab units were freighters, while the B unit has a steam generator exhaust clearly showing. The B was NOT built at the same time as the two A's. And the open question still remains - what became of it??
