The ranks of NYC veterans lost another member when Don Wetzel died 2 weeks ago.

Don was a steam-qualified engineer, home territory on the Big Four's Ohio Division out of Cleveland. He was a pilot and served as the NYC's corporate pilot, and he also worked on various projects in connection with the Perlman-era Research Lab at Collinwood.

Don was the designer and engineer of the M-497 jet-powered RDC that set the certified US speed record. He made many presentations to the NYCSHS and other groups about the circumstances which led up to and including the runs of the M-497 as well as about various incidents which occurred during his working career..

Don was active in the industry after retiring from the railroad. He will be missed by his many friends.
