I have heard that the sugar plantations in the Dominican Republic use narrow gauge steam locomotives which burn waste. Can anyone point me to more information about this.

They used to be common in sugar growing countries. Cuba had quite a lot (since Castro closed the sugar industry, I don't know whether any survive).
