Diesel hydraulics

Here's a link to the Wiki article on Vossloh diesel hydraulic locomotives. Being a North Amqerican, such engines are novelties for me. I got on this tack learning about rhe Deutsche Reichsbahn V180 locos.

The reason they're novelties is because they tried them here once - they couldn't handle the tonnage North American trains have, especially in the mountains. Maintenance also became a problem with foreign spare parts required.
