I drove over parts of this "Spur" recently and it looks mostly unused ?
I passed a gate which was in poor shape but locked near the rear entrance to the Depot at Guilderland Center.
Is this track in use or do they use the other end of the depot.

The Branch as it is refered to by SMS crews used once a day and on occasion twice. That Gate belongs to Galesi Group who owns the park not SMS.

NE-1 is on duty seven days a week. On occasion if there are no inbounds coming from CP they may not run. They actually ran twice on Thursday and had to run down late Thursday afternoon to meet up with a late running #938 which had 19 Loaded Racks for them. They ended up outlawing the train on the Branch and leaving it overnight til a fresh crew could recrew at 07:00 hrs to bring it back to the park. Back in September while new ties and surface work was being performed between Delanson and Altamont NE-1 was on duty at 03:30 hrs and ran in Darkness to Delanson to drop and pick up. There is a siding in Delanson that is referred to the "West Side" that is used for interchanging with CP. it runs from Cole Road to Main Street.

SMS does have some conventional business into the Voorheesville Industrial Park, ballpark 10-20 cars a week, which will presumably continue.
The future for SMS was bright long before the auto business started. They have attracted new customers that CP never could have dreamed of. With exception of the Autos from CP most of there interchange comes from CSX. If you take away the racks they average anywhers from one to two, or three to four from CP. Sometimes more. Most of it is Paper, Plastic Pellets and the occasional Hopper of feed. They have done wonders with the track in the Park. At SMS customer service is #1. They will do what ever it takes to help there customers out.
