NOACA serious about connecting downtown Cleveland with Cuyahoga Valley National Park via Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Regional planners have dreamed for more than two decades about connecting downtown Cleveland to Cuyahoga Valley National Park via the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.

But while previous attempts failed, the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency is getting serious about a new effort.

At a meeting Thursday afternoon, representatives of NOACA and partnering agencies reached an informal agreement on their roles and responsibilities in pushing the project forward this year, NOACA Executive Director Grace Gallucci told cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer.

The goal is to extend the scenic railroad 10.8 miles north to downtown from where it now ends at the northern edge of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park at Rockside Road in Independence.

Serious discussions about extending the scenic railroad started last summer, Gallucci said. Participating agencies include the City of Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, the Port of Cleveland, Cleveland Metroparks, the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority, the national park, the scenic railroad, and the nonprofit Canalway Partners.

Some of you probably heard this, but some of you are out of the area. Cuyahoga Valley Scenic will not be running trips until at least the summer due to the erosion challenges along their right of way with the Cuyahoga River.

Cuyahoga Valley Recreational Area [NPS] and CVSR are working on the erosion sites. With all the attention to rail safety due to East Palestine and a number of other derailments, it is probably a good idea.

FWRHS and their #765 is not scheduled to come this year.

The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad (reporting marks, CVSR) is a tourist attraction which operates more than 50 miles through Ohio's only national park situated just north of downtown Akron along the Cuyahoga River.

It is headquartered in Peninsula and the non-profit organization has been in operation since 1975.

This remains the case today although the trackage, originally owned by the Baltimore & Ohio with a history dating back to the 1880's, is now under the National Park Service's direction.

Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad resuming train rides in May

The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad’s National Park Scenic and Explorer Program excursions are returning to the rails next month.

The rides from Akron to Peninsula will resume May 5, with departures from Akron resuming for the first time in nearly a year, all seating options available from the Peninsula station and two dome cars on all scenic excursions.
