However, an inspection by OSHA days later on Jan. 4. found nine serious violations in how the company responded to the blast.

The company has 30 days to respond to the violations. For uncontested violations, the company must remedy the problem and pay the fine.

BALTIMORE (WBFF) — Maryland Department of the Environment has cited CSX Transportation for its response to an explosion at a coal silo last year in Curtis Bay, the agency said Wednesday...

MDE said the company did not take proper precautions to ensure that particulate matter from the blast became airborne. It said the company discharged unpermitted emissions including carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen, sulfur dioxide and volatile organic compounds into Curtis Bay. The company could face fines of up $25,000 per day or criminal penalties if the problem is not remedied.

Dust explosions are common whenever you have mass quantities of material being handled. Multiple grain handling facilities have blown up over the years. The sugar plant at Port Wentworth, GA a decade or so ago. Dust, oxygen and some form of spark and things go BOOM!
