What is a drop coupler?

A coupler like on a steam engine front, the type that could be hinged down so it would fold behind the cow catcher oon streamliners.
Last use of drop couplers I know of was on New Haven Roger Williams RDC A cars

was there ever a coupler that was hinged to fold to the side on any locomotive so as to be hidden on an E or F unit??

The two UP steam locos, 844 and 3985, each have a horizontally-swinging coupler in their cast steel pilots. A number of other roads used that design, made by Commonwealth Steel.

I know they had 'doors' to hide the front coupler...
