Hi,CR buffs, Im wondering if any one can help me out here. Does any one know the curent where abouts of where the Conrail GP-10s have wound up? How many exist etc. Also were all of the GP-10s converted to "hump units" or just the 7582-7597 group? Thank to who ever can help Happy Holidays.

There are many still floating around. I can conform that the 7550 is in service in South Jersey on the SRNJ as #102.

The Raritan Central in NJ has two GP10's that I know of. They are the 7563(low hood) & 7579(high hood). I think that they have another one, but I am not sure.

It looks like they've been gutted- are they parts units or are they being scrapped?

Those Geeps are probably going to be scrapped, but Larry's Truck & Electric is in no rush.

Did any of you ever hear a GP10 in use on CR?

Once in a very rare while they would run them on the Falls Road secondary in Lockport yard.

That high pitched whirrrr was like hearing the ice cream truck speeding down the street - you ran for the door and sprinted down to the tracks. One of my favorite sounds. First the engine, then the ice cream truck. HA!

(Yes in Lockport you gotta be fast to catch an ice cream truck. LOL.)

They sometimes were assigned to the run from Lockport to Brockport. I recall that whine very well...

During the "power shortage" of 1988, 1989, I was fortunate enough (unfortunate?) to be called from the AFHT hotel in Philly, to relieve a coal train at CP Falls, to run to SK. (my regular turn was SEPY/PYSE). Much to my chagrin (delight?) was a coal train, waiting at River, with 5 GP-10 locos, fresh out of storage, and a GP-35. This accumulation of rolling derelicts never made it to transition speed, except for approaching the Junction, at Manville. Between alarm bells, extreme wheel slippage, and thick, voluminous clouds of blue smoke, infiltrating the cab (running hammerhead :( ) the trip was memorable as one of the worst road trains, I had ever run, up to that point in time. Those locos were later assigned to Harrisburg, where they were yard switchers, and I recall them running in Enola, as well. On several occasions, those GP-35's, and even GP-30's would appear on a train, when things got "tight". Never saw them again, after about 1992, although the Harrisburg ramp job occasionally had one, or two, in use, at that time. As things have ended up, I occasionally get blessed, with the opportunity, to run one of these "junkers", and the memories they bring up are still as bad as I remember................. :-D

I echo Golden Arm's recollection of Conrail using GP8's and GP10's for just about anything up to the late '80's.

The last times I saw them were:

A low hood 75xx leading a Suffern, NY to Oak Island extra c1991...

In regular yard/roadswitcher service on the former Harrisburg Division, including Reading, Lebanon, Hershey, and Harrisburg-Enola up to the mid '90's...
