During my trip to Steamtown this past August, I saw the ex-CNJ passenger and freight station.

Obviously, it has been quite some time since the CNJ was in Scranton and it got we wondering what else may be left. Aside from the station, are there any other remnants of the CNJ in Scranton?

I believe that the building you photographed was the freight station, and that the long-gone passenger station was elsewhere, I've been told across the street from the freight station, e.g. the Steamtown side.

Ken -

You are correct.......The CNJ's passenger station sat on the other side of Lackawanna Ave., between it and the Lackawanna's Bridge 60. It, along with the engine facilites are long gone.

Here is a neat map of the area from the Black Diamonds To Tidewater site - http://www.gingerb.com/cnj_scranton_map.htm

Thanks for the information. I knew, by the photos, the one side did say "freight station", but didn't know the whole building was a freight station. And it's quite impressive for a freight station.

Hey OC -

Well, Scranton was "the end of the line" after all.....The CNJ was always second fiddle to the Lackawanna in town, so as they say, bigger is always better, and they needed to try to garner as much freight traffic as possible.

I'm a Scranton native, and drove or rode past the depot so many times growing up but never knew its history until fairly recently. FYI, these days there is far more freight activity in Scranton than than there had been in decades. Tracks that I'd never seen used are now. For instance, a few years ago, my wife and I were visiting Scranton and got stuck in traffic on Lackawanna Avenue. We looked up, and a few blocks ahead there was a freight train crossing the street. I NEVER saw that growing up.
