From another forum. AFAIK, it dates from 1910. Click Here

Gotta say that the time of one hour, fifty minutes is quite respectable, even by today's standards (it's an average speed of about 50 mph). Also, "the only down town road" has special emphasis, especially in light of the only "downtown road" of nowadays being PATH, the furthest west it goes being Newark. (One would think that NJT would be falling all over itself to promote better downtown access rather than laboring over midtown, as it has been.)

Sleepers after midnight nowadays? Forget it. Hourly service between NY and Philly nowadays, on any rail route, for an affordable fare? Forget it as well.

Dunno what a typical Amtrak fare is, but it's probably not that much less affordable than 1910's fare. And of course NJT/SEPTA is more affordable than 1910 was.

Had to have been pretty affordable, or else hourly service would not have been profitable and people would have taken another railroad whose fares were lower.

No reason to assume the hourly service was profitable.

In any case, the 1910 fare NY-Phil was unlikely to be less than $1.80 (dunno whether NJ and PA were two-cent-a-mile states). No cheaper RR fare available -- except maybe the total for a 4-to-5 hour (?) streetcar/interurban trip?
