I am trying to piece together Conrail 6730 originally Leigh Valley734's history. I know that it was purchased by the Monon and traded in on some C420s, but beyond that and the above info I am in the dark.

9 of the LV's 17 C628's were the Monon units.
LV 633-641.
delievered to the LV in 1968.
Monon returned them to Alco because they were too hard on the rails.
they can be identified from the other C628's mostly by a plated-over headlight opening on the nose. (there are other slight differences too)

Conrail 6730 was LV 634.

LV634 remained in its Snow Bird scheme until Conrail, was never painted Red.
according to the Conrail Cyclopedia, she did recieve Conrail blue!
but I havent found a photo of her in blue yet..

they were numbured 400-408 on the Monon..
I dont know if the numbering was kept consecutive from the Monon to the LV or not..but if it was, then the units numbers would have been:
Monon 401
LV 634
Conrail 6730

I know the numbering was consecutive from LV to Conrail,
but I dont know ifit was from Monon to LV.

Thank you scottychaos. I hope they did not scrap the locomotive.

oh! sorry Terry, I just assumed the scrapping was so obvious it didnt need to be mentioned! :(
one should never assume..
there are no surviving LV C628's..
they were all scrapped by Conrail around 1980.

here is a list of all known surviving and scrapped LV engines:

Of course one of the worst things Conrail did. Scrap entire classes of locomotives.

That was stupid of Conrail to do that.

stupid?
no, not really..
as railfans, and Alco fans, and as a huge LV fan myself, it seems like a terrible waste..but thats from our perspective.
we arent in the buisness of running railroads.
but, Conrail and every other railroad of all time has scrapped many thousands of locomotives..its just buisiness.
we cant really say a railroad is "stupid" for doing it..
its just "getting rid of old junk" from the railroad's perspective..
its ususally simply an economic necessity.

many 1957 Chevys were sent to the junkyard in 1967..they were just "used cars" then..no one cared.
today, is it stupid to haul your 1987 beat-up Ford tauris stationwagon to the junkyard?
no, not really..
but in 50 years some ford tauris fan is going to think so! ;)
should you try to locate a museum today that wants your boring Ford stationwagon?
should you keep it in your garage yourself in case future generations want it?
probably not..if its something rare and unique maybe..but not for a regular every-day beater..
those C628's were simply every-day beaters in 1980.

we cant blame the railroads for simply going about their buisness..
and all the railroads that have scrapped thousands of locomotives have also saved and donated a lot too..
Im not sure what Conrail donated specifically, but im sure they donated some things..
I know they donated the LV caboose in Sayre PA for one..
sure, its no C628.. but in 1980, who wanted a C628?
certaintly no railroads wanted any..they were just old junk then.
maybe they could have found a museum who wanted one, but that wasnt really Conrail's concern then..they were more concerned with simply surviving.
we should be happy for the Alcos we still have..no sense lamenting the dead..
sure, maybe Conrail could have done more, at least preserve ONE!
that would have been nice..but it wasnt really their responsibility.
sadly, not everything can be saved..
and we have plently of "preserved" engines today that are simply rusting away on old sidings, with no one to care for them..
not enough volunteers and money to go around for all of the "saved" engines
one could argue there are too many preserved engines as it is.. :(
best to work with what we have..

a LV U23B is coming to Sayre!!
im very excited about that!
and we have several LV C420's still out there..
at least 2 of which are "preserved"..and the rest are still doing their jobs!
Alco preservation is alive and well..

Mexico was always a safe haven for C628's Who knows maybe they reseved former Conrail units. Many of the N De M, FNM, & Pacifico C628's ran up into the late 90's untill they to were retired many of them are being rebuilt and preserved in Museums under oders of the Mexican Government.

there are at least 3 known preserved C628's in thre world.
2 in Mexico and 1 in Australia.
one of the MExico units is originally D&H!

and its possible there are as many as 8 more C628's "unpreserved" (not in museums) in Mexico! they were last reported there in 1999-2000.

This is great to hear. As much as we put 3ed world countrys down I think some of these places deserve credit for there will to keep hand me down locomotives in top running shape for as long as they can :P
