Is the Burlington GO station a descent place to sit back and watch things go by? What kind of traffic goes through? Taking a train trip up to Montreal in two weeks during spring break but plan to get the VIA experience and ride to Toronto for a day. Just looking for a location to ride GO to in order to sample the local action.

I suppose the Burlington GO station would be an okay place to catch some action. The station itself is just east of the point where the freight mainline diverges and does not provide a great view of the freight trains. You might want to consider taking a connecting GO bus from Burlington to the next station west, Aldershot. CN has a small yard there and does some switching from time to time. Currently Aldershot only sees GO trains during rush hour but there are plans to extend all-day weekday GO trains there once the additional tracks, presently under construction, are completed.

Trains passing the Burlington GO station include the GO trains, a few CN locals, and some VIA (and one Amtrak) passenger trains.

Another possible location to take GO to would be east to Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, or Oshawa. Here the CN main parallels the GO tracks and there are more CN and VIA trains than at Burlington or Aldershot.

Burlington is a good spot to see a lot of action(both freight and passenger), but Bayview Jct is much more scenic and the trains go slower through there. Usually there are railfans hanging out on the bridge at Bayview who are knowledgeable of the railroading scene on CN and CP in Southern Ontario.
