Mr Darling also highlighted the Channel Tunnel Rail Link and improvements to St Pancras, and said that there would be a thorough examination of the benefits of extending the line up to northern England and Scotland.

“A high speed line could improve journey times and bring potential economic benefits such as the billions of pounds of regeneration that has happened in Kings Cross and the Thames Gateway as a result of CTRL,” he said.
Whether anything will happen is another matter. The Treasury hates spending money on investment.
