I was wondering where the rebuilt GM 12-645's that were installed were sourced from when they were rebuilt and rengined?
They weren't new builds and were purchased through VMV, which is all that seems to be mentioned online. I wasn't aware of many EMD's fitted with such engines having been retired, especially at the time. About all I can think of is perhaps they came from retired SD39's that were being rebuilt to SD40-2 or SD40-3 specs, which I think was the fate of quite a Southern Pacific's fleet?
