i just want to know at break in two position in train why some locomotives have this feature to idle the engine at the time and some locomitves have around 40 seconds delay to idle the engine and what is the advantage and disadvantages for each of them .

The first scenario, was a safety feature to make sure you stopped.

The next one, (that they learned later) the delay, allows us to "try" to out run the cars that busted off from the headend. Can you see why thats important? If your moving right along and your train snaps, you dont want the headend to stop and have the cut slam into you. :-D I've heard stories about hogs that did cut the power too soon, not good.

After the big wreck in California with the potash train they learned its a good idea to still have dynamic brakes when in emergency.
