News article on Guilford's Boston-Maine Airways:

http://www.seacoastonline.com/news/1214 ... /77963.htm

Quote from article: "In filings to the DOT, the airline has repeatedly claimed financial fitness and that it had access to $7.2 million in loans from an affiliated company, Springfield Terminal Railway Co., which is owned by Guilford Transportation."

Personal opinion:

So it's true... the money they make from the railroad gets dumped into the airline... surprise, surprise!

Meanwhile, maintenance on the railroad is deferred, property taxes go unpaid, customers are refused service... and the profits are funneled into Mellon's latest amusement.

While the money from the railroad(some) goes into the "airline"(?),Guilford has habitually "slow" in paying for the other things you mentioned. even before Timmy added "toy airplanes" to his "toy trains": Your right, another "hobby".

Just finished reading a biography of Juan Trippe, founder and leader of the original Pan American World Airways. Mellon's NOT even close to this guy in understanding air travel/aircraft. Trippe continually stressed the BEST equipment, pushing airframe and powerplant manufacturers to improve. But his personality was hard to know and he was known to "stretch the truth" to achieve his goals, which began with getting the fledgling airmail contract away from Army Air Service and their very outdated aircraft and navigation aids.

OOPS,talking airplanes too much, better go to another forum on those.

Bud :(

The original Pan Am, and the amazing Juan Trippe were always stressing the best aircraft and service but were always two steps ahead of the bankruptcy court. Until 1991...

For my two cents, the Pan Am name should be what the "am-plane" company is called when we finally realize the legacy carriers make about 2% more sense than privatized LD passenger service.

The Pan Am officianados are just as offended as the BM/MEC/DH fans were back when Guilford first started repainting locos and rolling stock. To see their beloved air-travel empire painted on a boxcar (and subsequently covered in grafitti) has to be a slap in the face.

As someone else said, Juan Trippe is rolling in his grave.

I wouldn't fly on ANYTHING that the Guilford Rail operates or controls such as Pan AM, these people that run this outfit are known for violating time limits on overworking employees and cutting corners just to save a dollar...NO WAY!!! I suggest you pick a REAL AIRLINE that has a Proven track record, not a RAILORAD track record!!!

'Boston-Maine Airways' is quite an old name in aviation. See this article for some information on its operations in the 1930s, as a joint subsidiary of the Boston & Maine and Maine Central Railroads. And yes, Pan Am was involved back then too.
