Hi, I am an industrial archeologist that excavated a roundhouse and turntable constructed by the B&M RR in 1888. We found a 2-x-3.25 ft projection off the south wall of the turntable that was 3.25 ft west of the lead track. A grate or vent and was found within the projection with wood framing dividing the space. I noticed on the Danbury Railway Museum's website a photo of their turntable with a similar projection. Does anyone know what these projections functioned as or what equiptment that they housed?
I believe this was to be able to access the wheels that ran on the pit rail.
