Hi. I model the 1940 time period. I have a brass model of an offset side 3 bay hopper, of the style like the Boston & Albany 3 bay hoppers built in the late 20's, as shown on pg. 62 of David Sweetland's "NYC Color Guide to Freight & Passenger Cars". I would like to paint my for New York Central, not B&A. Did NYC repaint any of these cars to NYC style in the early 40's? Did NYC have any of their own 3 bay offset side hoppers at this time? If so, are there any pictures available?
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks.

On the website mentioned in the previous post, check out the Index P-14, Lot No. 824-H , self clearing hoppers, road nos. 904000 -904999, ref. drawing H-55.

Thanks to Dave Mackay and NYC_Dave for your info on the 3 bay offset side hoppers.
Were these cars always painted the boxcar red color seen in 1950's photos, i.e., were they that color in the 30's and 40's?
Finally, there is usually a class # stenciled on the sides of cars. What class were these cars as shown in the H-23 & H-24 drawings? I'd like to put the correct class # or letter on this model after I decal it.
Thanks again.

If you dig into the Canada Southern website(http://www.canadasouthern.com/caso/home.htm), you'll find that open hoppers were all black until February 1941, then freight car brown until June of 1956. NYC did not use "class" marks, but 'LOT" numbers, which were found above the NYC Oval Herald. Lot 556 looks like what you may want.
